A Prime Time Star is someone 65 or over who is making a significant difference in your life or in the quality of life in our community.

Never to Old to Play!

May is Older Americans Month, a perfect opportunity to show our appreciation for the older adults in our community. Since 1963, communities across the nation have joined in the annual commemoration of Older Americans Month—a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to celebrating the contributions and achievements of older Americans.

The theme for Older Americans Month 2012— Never Too Old to Play!— puts a spotlight on the important role older adults play in sharing their experience, wisdom, and understanding, and passing on that knowledge to other generations in a variety of significant ways. This year’s celebrations will recognize the value that older adults continue to bring to our communities through spirited participation in social and faith groups, service organizations, and other activities.

As large numbers of baby-boomers reach retirement age, many communities have increased their efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for older adults—many of whom remain physically and socially active through their 80s and beyond. Current trends show that people over age 60 account for an ever-growing percentage of participants in community service positions, faith-based organizations, online social networking as well as arts and recreational groups.

Lifelong participation in social, creative, and physical activities has proven health benefits, including retaining mobility, muscle mass, and cognitive abilities. But older adults are not the only ones who benefit from their engagement in community life. Studies show their interactions with family, friends, and neighbors across generations enrich the lives of everyone involved. Young people who have significant relationships with a grandparent or elder report that these relationships helped shape their values, goals, and life choices and gave them a sense of identity and roots.

While Shepherd’s Center Central provides services, support, and resources to older Americans year-round, Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show special appreciation for some of our most beloved citizens. We have many reasons to celebrate them!

For a nonprofit organization dedicated to issues of aging, the timing couldn’t be better to celebrate a big birthday. You see, we turn 40 this year! And, we’re not just getting older, we’re growing! The older population we serve is rapidly increasing in size and their growth is demanding that we grow along with them.
So, in honor of our 40th birthday, we are launching Friends of the Center. According to JoEllen Wurth, executive director at Shepherd’s Center Central, “Our new membership-based network will offer an opportunity for individuals and organizations to be part of the important programs that serve today’s midlife and older adults. This year, we need more help than ever before because the older population we serve is growing faster than ever before.”
Globally, older adults will soon outnumber infants, toddlers, and preschoolers around the world.
Wurth confirms, “The largest number of adults in world history are now turning 65 at the rate of 10,000 per day. As part of a national trend, we are feeling the age wave ripple across the Kansas City metropolitan area. The demand for the types of services we offer is growing and we need community support now to address the critical issues that we’ve advocated for years.”
One such issue is helping older adults preserve their independence. Wurth explains, “Most men and women want to stay in their own homes and in their own communities as they age. Based on current census information, we anticipate a huge increase in demand for our services in the next 48 months. We are actively seeking ways to accommodate the growing needs now. If you have older parents or grandparents in the Kansas City area, we need you to help us take care of them and their neighbors. Another issue experiencing an increase in demand is from family members, friends, and neighbors who personally care for older adults. Our many support programs and services require time, talent, and donations. Our new Friends of the Center network will help us leverage community support in ways that will help make a huge difference.”
Shepherd’s Center Central is a leader in the regional effort to ensure that all people can age successfully with dignity, security, and respect. Friends of The Center directly supports the programs that Shepherd Center Central offers. Friends of the Center has membership opportunities that are tiered for donation amounts of $100, $500, and $1,000.

This event kicks off our 40th Birthday celebration this year.

We are inviting volunteers, participants, congregations, politicians, and all who would like to celebrate our 40th birthday.

Hallmark character Maxine will be greeting guests as they arrive. There will be an archival display that includes photos from the past 40 years. Our Master of Ceremonies will share memories and quotes from founders, past volunteers, and key participants.

A sit-down lunch will be served.
