Johnson County Boomers: More Opportunities to ‘Explore Your Future’

The Walton Family Foundation awarded Shepherd’s Center Central a $5,000 grant to help the agency’s Coming of Age Program further expand its services in Johnson County. Tom Butkus with Arvest Bank made the check presentation on behalf of the Walton Family Foundation.

Shepherd’s Center Central Executive Director JoEllen Wurth said, “Our nonprofit empowers mid-life and older adults to live healthy and engaged lives.  This grant will help us focus on Johnson County by offering Explore Your Future workshops to area Boomers. This multi-session workshop series gives participants a unique opportunity to consider ‘What’s next?’  One important aspect of our program is the way we help men and women age 55 plus find volunteer roles in Johnson County that are personally meaningful for them.  Then, we help match volunteers age 55+ with just the right volunteer role.  The volunteer work is meaningful to the specific volunteer and to Johnson County at large.”

The following Johnson County partners are supported by training from Shpeherd’s Center Central and are open to working with Boomer volunteers: AARP Tax Aides, Braille Center, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, Cultural Crossroads, Gardner Historical Museum, Grace Hospice, Holy Cross Quilters and Crafters, Johnson County Adult Education, Johnson County Christmas Bureau, JCCC Carlsen Center Performing Arts, Johnson County Election Commission, Johnson County Human Services and Aging, Johnson County Library, Johnson County Parks and Recreation 50 Plus, Mission Sewing of Village Presbyterian Church, Olathe Salvation Army, Olathe School District, Seniors Serving Schools, Overland Park Historical Society, Reach Out and Read Kansas City, SafeHome, Shawnee Community Services, Shawnee Mission Meals on Wheels, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Shepherd’s Center Central, Sunflower House, and Village Presbyterian Food Pantry.
